What is post-surgical recovery care?
Post-surgical recovery care provides specialized support as your body heals after a surgical procedure. Depending on your needs and your surgeon’s instructions, care may include post-surgical lymphatic drainage, swelling management, wound dressing, therapeutic ultrasound, scar tissue treatment, and authorized drain or suture removal. At Healthy Way Med spa, every recovery plan is personalized according to your procedure, healing stage, symptoms, and surgeon’s protocol.
What types of surgery can post-surgical recovery care support?
We commonly support patients recovering from procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, breast surgery, facelift, body lift, Brazilian butt lift and other cosmetic or reconstructive procedures. Because every surgery and recovery is different, we review your medical history, procedure details, and surgeon’s instructions before recommending treatment. Some services require clearance or written authorization from your surgeon.
When should I begin post-surgical recovery treatments?
The appropriate starting time depends on your procedure, health history, healing progress, and surgeon’s recommendations. Some patients may be cleared to begin gentle lymphatic drainage relatively early, while others may need additional healing time. Always follow your surgeon’s instructions and receive clearance before beginning any post-surgical treatment.
What is post-surgical lymphatic drainage?
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage is a gentle, specialized manual technique intended to support the natural movement of lymphatic fluid. It may help manage swelling, fluid retention, tightness, and discomfort during recovery. It is performed with light, controlled movements and should not resemble a deep-tissue massage.
How is post-surgical lymphatic drainage different from a regular massage?
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage uses gentle, precise movements designed for tissue that is actively healing. A traditional massage may use pressure that is inappropriate for recently treated areas, incisions, drains, or tender tissue. Post-surgical sessions must be adapted to the procedure, healing stage, surgeon’s restrictions, and the patient’s comfort level.
Does post-surgical lymphatic drainage hurt?
Post-surgical lymphatic drainage should generally be gentle and should not involve forceful or aggressive pressure. Some areas may already feel tender, tight, or sensitive following surgery, but treatment is adjusted to keep you as comfortable as possible. Significant pain should always be reported to your provider and surgical team.
How many post-surgical recovery sessions will I need?
The number and frequency of sessions vary according to the procedure, amount of swelling, healing response, surgeon’s recommendations, and individual goals. Some patients benefit from a series of closely scheduled appointments early in recovery, followed by less frequent visits as healing progresses. Your care plan will be evaluated and adjusted throughout your recovery.
What should I expect during my first appointment?
Your provider will review your procedure, surgery date, medical history, current symptoms, medications, surgeon’s instructions, and any drains, sutures, incisions, or compression garments. The treatment area will be carefully assessed before services are recommended. Please bring your surgeon’s postoperative instructions and any required written clearance or authorization.
Can Healthy Way Med Spa follow my surgeon’s recovery protocol?
Yes. We recognize that every surgeon may have different postoperative instructions and timelines. Our team customizes your care around your surgeon’s protocol and communicates concerns when appropriate. Your surgeon remains responsible for directing your surgical care, and their instructions take priority throughout your recovery.
Do you work with patients who had surgery outside Sarasota?
Yes. We can support eligible patients who underwent surgery locally or traveled elsewhere for their procedure. Patients should bring their operative information, postoperative instructions, surgeon’s contact information, and any required written authorization. We do not replace the operating surgeon and may refer you back to that surgeon when concerns require surgical evaluation.
Can you remove drains or sutures?
Drain or suture removal may be available when it falls within the treating provider’s professional scope and your surgeon has given appropriate instructions or authorization. Removal must also meet the surgeon’s timing and clinical criteria. An evaluation is required, and we will not remove a drain or suture when doing so would be inappropriate or inconsistent with your surgeon’s protocol.
Do you provide wound dressing services?
Yes, wound dressing changes may be incorporated into an appropriate post-surgical care plan according to your surgeon’s instructions. Our team carefully evaluates the treatment area and follows appropriate cleanliness and care protocols. Wounds showing signs of a possible complication require evaluation by your surgeon or another appropriate medical provider.
How may therapeutic ultrasound support post-surgical recovery?
When appropriate for the patient’s procedure and healing stage, therapeutic ultrasound may be used to support tissue mobility and address areas of tightness or firmness. It is not appropriate for every patient or every stage of recovery. Your provider will determine whether it can be safely incorporated into your individualized treatment plan.
Can you treat post-surgical fibrosis or hardened areas?
Firmness, tissue tightness, and areas commonly described as fibrosis can sometimes develop during recovery, particularly following liposuction. Depending on the cause and stage of healing, an individualized plan may include gentle manual techniques, therapeutic ultrasound, lymphatic support, or scar-focused treatment. New, painful, warm, red, or rapidly changing areas must first be evaluated for a potential complication.
When can scar tissue treatment begin?
Scar treatment generally begins only after the incision has closed sufficiently and your surgeon has approved treatment. The timing and techniques depend on the scar’s location, age, appearance, sensitivity, and stage of healing. Treatment may focus on improving tissue mobility, flexibility, comfort, and the appearance of the healed area.
Should I continue wearing my compression garment?
Wear your compression garment according to your surgeon’s instructions. The correct garment, fit, pressure level, and wearing schedule depend on your surgery and recovery stage. Contact your surgeon if the garment causes severe pain, numbness, skin discoloration, breathing difficulty, or concerning pressure on an incision.
What symptoms require immediate medical attention?
Post-surgical recovery services are not a substitute for urgent or emergency medical care. Contact your surgeon promptly about increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound separation, unusual swelling, worsening pain, fever, or other concerning changes. Seek emergency medical care for symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, confusion, or sudden one-sided leg pain or swelling.
